Strange Case of the day: 'Blue-eyed Butcher' Released from Prison
'Blue-eyed Butcher' who murdered her husband by stabbing him 193 times in 2003 has been released from prison. So, what was her case? Let's look at it in 6 mins
Life
Susan Wright was born on April 24, 1976, in Houston, Texas.
At 17, she worked as a topless dancer for two months.
In 1997, while working as a restaurant waitress she met Jeff Wright.
They married in 1998 while she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant with their first son, Bradley.
In 2002, a daughter - Kailey was born.
Wright claims that her husband began to abuse her during the first few years of their marriage.
Crime
In 2003, Susan Wright, 26, tied her husband, Jeff Wright, 34, to their bed and stabbed him 193 times with two different knives.
She buried his body in their backyard.
Susan attempted to cover up the crime scene by painting the bedroom.
Next day, she filed a false domestic abuse report in order to get a restraining order against her husband.
On Jan 18, Susan asked her attorney to come to her home and admitted to stabbing her husband.
She turned herself in to authorities on Jan 24.
Trial
Her murder trial started in 2004.
She had already pleaded not guilty to killing her husband by reason of self-defense.
Attorney depicted Susan as a scheming wife who seduced her husband into bed, tied him up, repeatedly stabbed him, and then buried his body in their backyard.
Her main intention was collecting a $200,000 life insurance policy.
At her trial, Susan Wright testified in her own defense.
She emotionally claimed: "I couldn't stop stabbing him; I couldn't stop. I knew as soon as I stopped, he was going to get the knife back and he was going to kill me. I didn't want to die."
She testified that on the night of the murder, Jeff Wright was on a cocaine binge and was violent, having allegedly beaten her.
Susan Wright's mother, among others, testified for the defense, claiming they witnessed Susan's bruises.
Prosecution presented a striking demonstration by bringing their actual bed into the courtroom.
Sentencing
In 2004, after more than 5 hours of deliberations, the jury convicted Susan of murder.
She showed no reaction to the guilty verdict.
They sentenced Susan to 25 years in prison.
She was imprisoned at the Crain Unit, under SID Number: 04835513.
Appeal
Susan re-appealed in 2008.
A new witness, Misty McMichael, the wife of former NFL Super Bowl champion Steve McMichael and ex-fiancée of Jeff Wright, came forward to tell her story.
Misty described the abuse and violence during her 4-year relationship with Jeff Wright.
Then it was also shown that the prosecution's theory that Jeff was tied to the bed was not supported by the medical examiner who excavated the body.
Medical examiner even testified that Jeff had a significant amount of cocaine in his body the night he died.
It was also revealed - that day Jeff came home from a boxing class and punched his son.
Jeff also had several knife wounds on his hands, forearms, back, and the backs of his legs, indicating defensive wounds inconsistent with being tied to a bed.
Susan was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In 2010, her sentence reduced to 20 years.
She was eligible for parole since 2014, at the age of 38.
She was denied parole on 2014 and 2017.
Susan was approved for parole on July 2, 2020.
On Wednesday, December 30th, 2020 she was released at the age of 44.
Culture
Her case has been featured on CourtTV, Snapped, 48 Hours Mystery, Deadly Women and on an episode of Secret Lives of Stepford Wives.
Susan's case was also the subject of the 2012 Lifetime original movie, Blue Eyed Butcher.
