Today's Strange History (October 21, 2020)
World War II: Exactly 76 years ago in 1944, US troops captured Aachen. 1st large German city to fall.

Dictator: In 1950, Chinese forces occupied Tibet.
Tragedy of Aberfan: Today in 1966, 116 children and 28 adults died as a coal waste heap slid and engulfed a school in Aberfan, South Wales.

Sprinter: In 2014, professional sprinter Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 5 years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pearl: 1 year ago in 2019, World's oldest natural pearl - 8000 years old was discovered during excavations at Marawah Island, near Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Freedom of Press: In 2019, Australia's biggest newspapers all blanked out their front pages in protest against press restrictions.

Strange Case of the day: 5 Serial Killers Who Are Still Alive or Free
After writing about the Top 5 Serial Killers by Number of Victims, so many of you emailed me to write about serial killers who are still alive. So I started digging that up for you. Let’s start…
5. Samuel Little (93 Possible Victims)

He is an American serial killer.
Was convicted of killing 3 women.
Later investigations linked 31 other murders to him.
He is now considered as America's most prolific serial killer.
He claims he killed as many as 93 victims total, three above his initial confession of 90.
FBI later confirmed a total of 50 murders linked to him.
Currently, he is alive & serving his sentence at the California State Prison, Los Angeles County.
Investigations are still ongoing.
4. Fernando Hernández Leyva (100+ Possible Victims)

He is a Mexican serial killer.
Very little is known about his case.
Confessed to 100 murders and 6 kidnappings at the time of his arrest in 1999.
Later retracted and claimed that he had been beaten by the police and his family threatened in order to force him to confess.
He is accused of 137 murders in 5 southern Mexican states.
Convicted of 33 murders and sentenced 50 years in prison.
He unsuccessfully tried to kill himself in prison.
Currently, he is Mexico's worst documented serial killer.
He is alive & serving his sentence in "La Palma" prison.
He will be released in 2049, at 84 years of age.
3. Pedro Rodrigues Filho (100+ Possible Victims)

He is a Brazilian serial killer who pursued and killed other criminals.
He claimed to have killed over 100 victims, 47 of them were inmates in his prison.
He also killed his father and ate a piece of his heart.
Convicted and sentenced to 128 years, but the maximum one can serve in Brazil is 30 years.
Due to changes in different laws, he served 35 years in prison & was released in 2018.
He also started a YouTube channel as a crime commentator.
2. Luis Garavito (172-300+ Possible Victims)

He is a Colombian serial killer.
Child-murderer, torture-killer, and rapist known as "La Bestia" ("The Beast").
He confessed to killing 140 boys between 8 and 16 years old.
He is suspected of murdering over 300 victims, mostly street children.
He has been described by local media as "the world's worst serial killer."
He has been sentenced to 1853 years and 9 days in jail.
He is alive and currently serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison in Valledupar in the department of El Cesar in Colombia.
Due to his good behavior in prison, he could probably apply for early release.
1. Pedro López (300+ Possible Victims)

He is also a Colombian serial killer.
Child-murderer and rapist, known as "The Monster of the Andes".
He was sentenced for killing 110 girls.
But he claimed to have raped and killed more than 300 girls across Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.
Guinness World Records credited Lopez as being the "most prolific serial killer" of the twentieth century.
Surprisingly, he was released in the late 1990s.
His current whereabouts are unknown.
